In today’s fast-paced world, technology is evolving faster than ever. While it can sometimes feel overwhelming, older adults have numerous tools and strategies to stay connected and make the most of modern tech. Whether you’re new to digital tools or simply want to improve your tech skills, here are some practical tips for 2025 for ways older adults can keep up with today’s technology.

1. Embrace Online Learning Resources

One of the best ways to stay updated is by leveraging online learning platforms. Many websites offer free courses tailored to beginners, covering everything from using smartphones to navigating social media. Websites like Udemy, Coursera, and LinkedIn Learning provide step-by-step tutorials, while YouTube offers countless video guides for any tech-related topic.

2. Get Comfortable with Smartphones and Tablets

Smartphones and tablets are now vital tools for everyday living. For seniors, these gadgets are user-friendly, portable, and simple to operate. Modern smartphones are equipped with built-in accessibility options like voice commands, screen magnification, and adjustable text sizes. I loved being able to see my aunt from afar using the Facetime video feature on my iPhone. Take some time to explore the settings and features on your device. You might want to try apps like Google Assistant or Siri for assistance with navigation and tasks.

3. Stay Social with Social Media

Social media isn’t just for younger generations—it’s an excellent way for older adults to stay connected with family and friends. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram, offer simple ways to share photos, updates, and engage in conversations. I also recommend TikTok just for the laughs, the "how to" videos and heart warming inspirational posts. There are also private groups and communities where seniors can connect over shared interests. If you’re hesitant to dive in, ask a tech-savvy friend or family member for a quick tutorial. My cousin Belita's grand-children have taught her a thing or two about using instagram and now I'm so happy to connect with her from so many miles away. Here are a few less known options that are growing in popularity:

  1. BlueSky has recently become more popular as many individuals, myself included, grew frustrated with Twitter. I joined BlueSky not long ago, and it has been a positive experience so far. The community is friendly and inviting, with minimal negativity, and the app is relatively easy to navigate once you take the time to get accustomed to it.

  1. You might enjoy Clubhouse and NoomVibe (previously known as Wisdom), as they are two audio-only apps that are quite user-friendly. Another audio-only app I frequently use is the Stereo app. It has a large user base, yet many people are still unaware of it. Several times a week, I host a health and wellness-themed chat called "Burning Fat While We Chat." The app is entertaining and simple to navigate, allowing you to join any conversation that piques your interest or host your own talk show. All three of these audio apps were launched around 2020.

4. Use Technology to Manage Health

Technology related to health is rapidly advancing, aiding seniors in maintaining more independent lifestyles. Devices like smartwatches and fitness trackers, such as the Apple Watch or Fitbit, are capable of monitoring heart rates, counting steps, and even notifying loved ones during emergencies. Furthermore, telemedicine is gaining popularity, allowing you to consult with doctors from the comfort of your home. Another option you might find interesting is Oculus, a virtual reality (VR) company acquired by Meta (Facebook), which offers a headset for engaging in social and physical activities within "the metaverse." Being in my fifties, I've enjoyed using mine for entertainment, playing games like bowling with my husband and kids, and exploring virtual worlds to socialize at clubs and events. My favorite Oculus activities include boxing with animated personal trainers and dancing. The guided meditation, brain games, and aerobics classes have helped me stay physically and mentally sharp. Older adults with mobility challenges can still explore the world from their bed or favorite chair. Getting acquainted with these tools can greatly enhance your quality of life.

5. Understand Internet Safety

Online safety is critical for everyone, especially older adults, who may be more vulnerable to scams and cyber threats. Make sure you understand basic cybersecurity practices, such as using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and avoiding suspicious emails or websites. There are also free programs like LastPass to help you manage your passwords securely. Taking these steps can help ensure a safe online experience.

6. Leverage Voice Assistants for Convenience

Voice assistants, like Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple’s Siri, are powerful tools that can make everyday tasks easier. You can ask for the weather, control smart home devices, set reminders, play music, and even get the latest news—all with simple voice commands. They are especially useful for people with mobility or vision challenges and are easy to integrate into daily routines.

7. Join Tech Workshops or Senior Tech Groups

Many community centers, libraries, and senior organizations offer workshops specifically designed to help older adults become more tech-savvy. These group settings provide an opportunity to ask questions, practice skills, and meet others who are learning too. Some tech companies even offer special programs or discounts to seniors, so it’s worth researching what’s available in your area.

8. Practice Regularly

Like any new skill, becoming proficient with technology takes time and practice. Try setting aside a few minutes each day to explore new apps, settings, or devices. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll become, and the faster you’ll catch up with emerging trends.

9. Seek Support from Family and Friends

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Family members, friends, or caregivers can provide assistance when needed, whether it’s troubleshooting a problem or simply explaining how something works. Many people are happy to help, and this can make the learning process less intimidating.

Conclusion: Stay Curious and Open-Minded

Keeping up with technology in 2025 doesn’t require being a tech expert—it just takes curiosity, patience, and a willingness to learn. By utilizing online resources, embracing new devices, and practicing regularly, older adults can stay connected and make the most of the digital world. Remember, technology is meant to make life easier, and with the right approach, it can be a powerful tool for enhancing your lifestyle, health, and relationships.
